![]() ![]() This was their original attempt at bringing back the id trio FPS franchises and it failed. The game was also very buggy with a ton of balancing issues and got mostly ironed out by the time it was too late. It failed because the Arena FPS is not a popular genre anymore and Quake is not the leading name amongst FPS fans it used to be. The hero shooter aspect was just to bring something new to Quake than it just being a simple modern Quake 3. The game will be lovecraftian themed and the third pillar of the three horsemen of 90s FPS badassery will return to its former glory.ĭid you just call Champions a smash bros FPS crossover? You forget that Quake 3/Live is literally the exact same thing with the crossover stuff (just without a Wolfenstein character at the time). And maybe not in the way anyone thinks, my bet is on level design, while maintaining classic Quake shooting/movement, I feel like level design will be something that's going to stand out in the new Quake game. You will most likely see a return to the core of what made Quake good, with spins on gameplay. Quake is next, they'll come out with it, and it will be at the very least just decently good. If any of you recall watching the Doom devs talk about their apprehensions while making the game they spoke about how worried they were it was going to flop because of how different it was from all other modern fps games. Not only this, Doom (2016) made id realize that they can make a game with minimal story, have it be ultra violent, and return to what made Doom good in the first place, brutal nonstop killing of demons with metal blarring in the background. ![]() (Probably would've worked too if they didn't outsource to Sabre) Quake has only been delayed due to Quake Champions being a flop, id's gamble on their Smashbrothers FPS hero shooter trying to cash in on the aspect of cross overs and modern trends. Regardless what anyone's personal opinions are on these games they're considered some of the best FPS games of the decade, just as they were back in the day. Id successfully repeated history with both Doom and Wolfenstein, both Wolfenstein 1 (2014) & 2 (2017) and Doom 2016 & Eternal were incredible success stories and a return to their former glory. Wolfenstein, Doom, and Quake were massive back in the day, and I believe they have had plans for the last 11 years to bring back all three in big ways. The reason I think this is that I believe that id had planned to repeat history. Xbox Play Anywhere functionality is included on Series X/S, while PS5 gets DualSense Adaptive Trigger and integrated speaker support.ĭoom Eternal's Horde Mode is now available in the new free Update 6.66.Regardless if the rumors about the new Quake game being announced at Quakecon are true or not there will be a new Quake game eventually. Once installed, Xbox Series X/S and PS5 will both run Quake at 120fps with a maximum resolution of 4K. ICYMI, Quake's 25th anniversary enhanced edition, which released for PC and consoles back in August, recently received a free "next-gen" upgrade for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.Īs Matt explained at the time, the original enhanced edition - which bundles together Quake, its two official expansions, plus two additional expansions by Wolfenstein: The New Order developer Machine Games - was already an extremely solid brush-up of the quarter-century-old FPS classic, but the newly released "next-gen" upgrade adds a little extra oomph for Xbox Series X/S and PS5 owners. So while all we can do is chalk this up as an enthusiastic rumour at this point, I think it's a pretty compelling one. We've recently seen the release of the 25th anniversary enhanced edition, Quake 2 conveniently-enough turns 25 next year, and with Microsoft's acquisition of the company this time last year, it's possible the company's IP portfolio has had a refresh. And "sci-fi and fantasy environments" fit more neatly with Quake more than they do Doom, not least because the latest Doom game only released last year. With Machine Games presumably leading on Wolfenstein and Avalanche leading on Rage, that leaves id Software with just a couple of options for what that "iconic action FPS" might be - Doom or Quake. ![]()
